Thorium Reactors

Hey Guys,

Just heard the news that, The Kalpakkam fast breeder reactor, near Tamil Nadu, India, is well on its way to completion by 2012. Once complete, it will usher in the second phase of India’s three-stage plan to achieve thorium-based energy independence by 2025.

So gathering some info about the same and will keep you guys updated. Look forward to a post in this regard soon.

  1. Over the past 25 years, all 3 stages have been prototyped and proven successful at a pilot project level. The goal of closing the thorium fuel cycle has been successfully achieved.

The current effort is to scale it commercially so the benefits of clean, unlimited thorium energy can be brought to all Indians - and the rest of the world.

  2. Yes and lets hope that the commercial production of energy from Thorium starts soon, so that we may become more self-sufficient and shift to a cleaner and better source of energy.

  3. We do need energy resources and this need is going to mount up and up in the coming years. Hope it starts soon.

  4. It is ready to start... All the researchha completed quite some time back...

All they are doing right now is making sure that ge energy source is commercially viable..

Let's hope they start soon as the energy dand in India is constantly increasing as is the population. And also it takes more than ten yers for them to contatruct and put into running a nuclear reactor. I just hope they start the construction for more than one at the same time, so by the time they are functional, and india's energy needs have grown manifold, they would have a good amount of energy to contribute rather than making Brest reactor first and waiting for it to start working before constructing more and wasting time...

  5. If it's ready, that's brilliant. Good for us. :)
