Pirates of the Caribbean

Yesterday i was watching one of my favorite movies, 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. I just love Johnny Depp's acting is the role. The way he acts always drunk is just too beautiful and enjoyable to watch. I watched the first part, one that i have seen several times before, but enjoy watching it every once in a while. Then I couldn't resist and watched the second part 'The Dead Man's Chest' even though i had to get up early today. It was a beautiful movie and i plan to watch the third part soon, perhaps even today.

There are some movies, you just love, some movies which are made and directed so beautifully that you can watch 'em over and over again. They  always remain fun and interesting. The essential ingredient for making such a movie, i believe, is creativity and detail. You need to deviate from the monotonous and stereotype scripts. But making a unique script and movie is not enough to make it evergreen, it needs to have detail. What you show should seem real, not in a literal sense obviously, otherwise star wars and all other sci-fi movies would never exist;). By real I mean, that the effects you put in to depict your mind, as far from reality that it may be, but the effects and planning should be so, that if we accept the virtual dreamworld you take us to, it should be complete.

Allow me to explain with an example. Hrithik Roshan claims his latest movie 'Guzaarish' to be one of his best movies ever. He says that the movie has a meaning and a very subtle definite meaning to it, but if you see the movie "The Prestige", you will realize what is actual magic, screenplay and most importantly DETAIL. Hrithik portrays a magician who gets injured while performing one of his tricks. A rival magician deliberately causes the accident which leaves him paralyzed for life. The rival being one of his best friends.

Now, if you see, 'The Prestige' you will clearly see that the original background story of 'Guzaarish' is based on it. Two friends, both budding magicians develop rivalry and how they get back at each other. how one injures the other in a magic trick. What i wish to point out here is, both movies had in the storyline of magic tricks. The Prestige was totally based on magic and did show a lot of good tricks, whereas, Guzaarish showed Hrithik flying in air and his disciple 'standing on a fan and making paper fly'; and all i could say was, "bah.. big deal".

I really hope Hrithik had seen The Prestige before accepting this movie and if he has, I'm sure he prays people don't see it.

Anyway, some movies are good some movies are OK and some are even pathetic, but there are only a few which are timeless and evergreen. Big example, Shawshank Redemption. I watch it every time i don't have anything to watch. Try it out guys, also see The Prestige.

Signing Off..

Recognizing Your Disruptive Skills

This is an article i came across on the web recently and found pretty interesting so decided to share it with my readers. This article is about recognizing your disruptive skills and employing them in the workplace to get paid for what you're worth. Everyone who works has at some point in his career if not frequently felt that he/she is not being paid for what they're worth. This article helps us, or perhaps shows us the direction in which to look to realize our true potential and present it to the employers.

I have just jotted down some intercepts from the article which i felt were kinda important. If you like these and would like to read the complete article, please click on the heading.

At the onset, and not like usually, i would like to thank Ms. Whitney Johnson for this very beautiful and informative article. Does not do her enough just to write "courtesy Ms. Whitney Johnson"at the end of the article, so thanked her at the beginning itself.

Now the intercepts:

  • To actually recognize your Disruptive skills, ask yourself the following questions:
  1. What do you do 'Reflexively' well?
    - To help you know this answer, ask yourself, what would you be doing when you don't  have anything to do?
    - What one or two things would you spend your time doing even if you were not being compensated?
These questions hep you understand what you're actually interested in doing and that is one thing you would definitely be good at.
  2. What do others identify as being your best skills?
    - An easy way to find this out is to ask your colleagues to complete this simple sentence: " One of the greatest ways you add value is ___________".
  3. Do you have a confluence of skills?
The answers to these questions will help you analyze yourself better and to know your strengths.

  • Keep an eye out for those compliments that you habitually dismiss. It is possible you are discounting a strength that others value. The tendency to deflect complements is often understandable and even justifiable, but over the course of our career, it will leave us trading at a discount than what we are worth.

  • While it is likely these proficiencies are not your best skis, but they typically carry a price tag of sweat and tears; and they speak volumes about prospective hires.

  • It is not required that your skills be limited to your profile, your diversified skills give an insight to who you actually are and what you are capable of. Something your degree does not tell.

  • Remember, Innovative ideas do not come from rational thought, but from flash intuition. -Dr. Amar Bose ( Founder of BOSE systems).

  • Disruptive skill and Sustaining skill is the two step guide to success. You recognize your disruptive skills and put them to good use making them sustainable. It is only once they become sustainable, you start to gain or profit from them.

  • Towards the end, know, Achieving your true value does not happen overnight. Most of us begin in a rebar type slot - with assignments, no one wants. But as we gain a foothold in our chosen career, using our disruptive skills to stand out from the crowd, and leveraging our hard-won skills, to get in and stay in the game, we can upend others' perception of our worth. Beginning first as a 'Disruptive-Emerging Growth' story and in time evolving into a 'Best of Breed' story. A sure formula for getting paid for what you're worth not just for a year or two, but for decades.
Hope you guys enjoying reading this. Please share your comments if your have any. :)

Optical control of heart muscles

Came across this article which demonstrated the control of heart muscles in mice to induce artificial fibrillation. One may think why would we want to produce fibrillation, but the thing is if this stimulation can produce arrhythmias, it can also be modified to produce a natural heartbeat, it could become a pacemaker. Then one thinks, we already have pacemakers and they work just fine. Then again, the average life of a surgically implanted very expensive pacemaker is 5-15 years because the energy source, the battery has limited capacity. Here's the interesting part, if we use optical pacemakers, the main advantage is that these work on light production which is done by LEDs or laser sources, preferably the former, which will utilize much less energy per beat, thus increasing the life of the pace maker significantly, MANIFOLD. Thus actually reducing the requirement of another very expensivve surgery to change the pacemaker in pacemaker dependent patients. It will become HUGE a great invention to increase longevity. Eagerly awaiting its development.

The link to the original article is attached for further reference.

Only problem in the article is that it says: "Photostimulation is much more suitable: the cells will even withstand stimulations of several minutes at a time without problems. " . The actual duration of the photo stimulation as of now is limited to a few minutes, future developments will take care of this too making its use continuous and not limiting its use to a few minute or hours, but an entire life-time.

Optical Control of Muscles

This is an article which i came across right now and found it quite informative, so thought it would be a great thing to share. i have enclosed the link to the actual article if you find it interesting. here is a brief description about the article:

In a study involving bio-engineered mice whose nerve-cell surfaces are coated with special light-sensitive proteins, researchers at Stanford University were able to use light to induce normal patterns of muscle contraction.   The new approach allows scientists to more accurately reproduce muscle firing order, making it a valuable research tool. The investigators, from Stanford’s schools of medicine and of engineering, also believe this technique could someday spawn practical applications, from restoring movement to limbs paralyzed by stroke or spinal-cord or brain injury, to countering spasticity caused by cerebral palsy.

sounds quite beneficial to the human race if it works out..;)

Glass Box, the successor of Black Box

This is an article which i came across while surfing the IEEE website. It is a pretty good article and talks about the requirement of new security and monitoring practices in the aviation industry. The author is a professor in the University of Texas.

The link is provided and I'd say, you should give it a few minutes.

Enjoy.. food for thought..

Nuclear Reactors

Recently I came across this website, which was discussing that how old the nuclear reactor technology has become. We have been generating electricity from Nuclear Reactors from over half a century now and in this time period, the design and construction of the Reactors has not changed one bit. These days the technology is growing everyday, everyday there are new developments and discoveries, but one field seems to remain the same and no upgrades are being done in its direction.

This article gave seven new designs that have been thought about and are being developed. Some of them are close to approval and others are still on the drawing board. i have been going through them and plan to upload the important parts on my blog soon.

Just wanted to let you guys know what I'm up to...

Dr. Abdul Kalam's message to every Indian

This was forwarded to me as an E-Mail, and i actually liked it a lot, so I decided to put it up on my blog for more people to see. Its a letter from Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam to all Indians.

Here it goes:

Dear Indians,

Point worth pondering

Why is the media here so negative?

Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements?

We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why? We are the first in milk production. We are number one in Remote sensing satellites. We are the second largest producer of wheat. We are the second largest producer of rice. Look at Dr. Sudarshan , he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements
but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.

I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news.

In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime.. Why are we so NEGATIVE? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign things? We want foreign T.Vs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign technology.

Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that self-respect comes with self-reliance?

I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 year old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is. She replied: I want to live in a developed India . For her, you and I will have to build this developed India . You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation.

Do you have 10 minutes? Allow me to come back with a vengeance.

Got 10 minutes for your country? If yes, then read; otherwise, choice is yours..

YOU say that our government is inefficient. YOU say that our laws are too old. YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage. YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke. The airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination. YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits. YOU say, say and say. What do YOU do about it?

In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan .. Will the Indian citizen do that here?'

He's right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility. We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms. We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public.

When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child! and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? 'It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry.' So who's going to change the system?

What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr.Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away.

Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England . When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money.

Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one's conscience too….

I am echoing J. F. Kennedy's words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians…..

'ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY'

Lets do what India needs from us.

Thank you,

Dr.. Abdul Kalam

I know some of you may think that it says the same ol' stuff that everyone tells us, but if we read it closely, i think he's right. We need to be the change. I would also like to express my appreciation of the recent Tata Tea advertisments which bear the logo 'Jago Re', as I do believe, they are doing a pretty good job of pointing people in the right direction; showing us where we are wrong and what small things can we do to bring about the change.

So friends, don't just wake up today, Jago Re!!

Today's Education and Methodologies

Today a strange thing happened, which made me decide that it is something I definitely need to write about on my blog. I was preparing my sister for a math test which she had the same day in her tuition. Oh, I did not introduce her; she is in the twelfth standard, in the CBSE board. The syllabus of the test included just one exercise (about 20 questions) on ‘application of differentiation’.
My sister, to be very frank is not a genius of minds; she’s quite an average student. A student who finds mugging an easier and time saving route as compared to understanding. When I heard the name of the chapter she needed help with, I knew this is not her cup of tea, as it included understanding and as the name suggests application of various formulae and concepts of differentiation.
We started the exercise, and as expected the level of difficulty was not quite high, the questions were pretty simple, if you give it enough thought. To my pleasant surprise, she solved the first one or two questions with relative ease. I was very glad to see that she has improved and is able to solve questions herself. Then the actual thought provoking questions began and I had expected, she immediately stopped. She could not figure out where to start with. I was expecting this, so started helping her out and explain how you should go about solving differentiation problems.
At a later stage, we both were stuck on a particular question and I could not figure out how to proceed from a particular step; at that moment she suggested “let us use double differentiation”, I said, we do not use double diff, at such places, casually, I asked her, “do you know where it has to be used”, “I don’t now, our sir uses it in almost every other question”.  I was shocked to hear this reply. I asked “do you know what differentiation actually is?”, “nope”...
I was shocked; it was then that I decided that this needs to go down into my blog. People need to know what our present education system is doing to our children. The teachers at school, the tuition teachers, all know only one thing; we need to make the students get marks. And making them mug seems an easy way for the same. No wonder, no one cares to actually explain what these concepts are and what they mean, why they are used. What do we expect out of these children, who are taught in this way? How can we blame them? They are, by innocent learners and when the teachers are not ready to take the pains to explain the concepts, why would they go out of the way to understand them? It is indeed pitiful, the situation and the method of teaching the teachers have opted for. For them it is just an easy way out, to get a good result, but in the process, they are limiting the development of these young minds. How do we expect good engineers or doctors, or any experts for that matter, when the students today are not taught to understand? The parents are too busy or too outdated to actually question or check their children’s understanding in any scientific or mathematical subjects. All they can do is look out for English a little. Apart from that they themselves lack sufficient knowledge to test their kids. It is up to the elder children of the house to keep a track on the younger ones of the family.
I really hope the government of India does hear this plea and does something to change this situation that its curriculum has allowed the teachers to produce. It has several countries and education boards to follow and change itself. It is the need of the hour that this matter is made public; it needs to be brought to the notice of the educational council and ministry of India. We need publicity and a huge support from the society. We all need to work on this to make it understood. It is only in the hands of the youth of this country to support it future. Please join in and make this possible.

A New Beginning

Well people, my college life has ended. Time has come for me to enter the corporate world. Another Bio-Medical Engineer is in the market looking for a job.

When I entered the college, I had chosen to become a Mechanical Engineer. I had planned to join the Merchant Navy, earn a Quick Buck and then take an early retirement to enjoy life king size. Things 'obviously' din't turn out to be as planned. When I went for the counselling of our college, I was shocked to see that only one branch was available in the college, a branch i had never heard of, I din't even know the meaning of Bio-Medical engineering. I was told that if i secured enough marks, i would be given an option to have my branch changed after the first year. Sounded good, I decided to take the seat available and to change into mechanical in the second year as the first year course was same for all branches.

A few months into college I decided to do some research on the branch i was studying in. It only meant sense to know the field. In the course of gathering knowledge about this specific branch, I started to enjoy the subjects that were yet to come. I  liked the prospects of the branch. I was told quite a lot of good things about the branch and its value in the market. It was quite good. All the things were nice to hear. A little while later, I decided that i wanted to continue this branch. And I did. I gave up the thought of becoming a mechanical engineer. And now, four years later i emerge a Bio Medical engineer.

All the things i had heard about the market value were true, the sad part, not in India. All the things i had heard are true outside India. In India however, the things are entirely different. The bio medical jobs which are present here are dominated by electronic engineers and engineers with a diploma in bio medical instrumentation. I feel sad for the fact that being in India, foreign colleges and companies would not take engineers directly from normal institutions, IITs and similar colleges are a different matter, but a college like mine  has no value directly in foreign companies.

Hmmm... Looking for jobs is not an easy task at all, especially with the fact that I hate group discussions. Hate people screaming and yelling without making any sense. And they yell just for the sake of showing that they are participating. Hell I don’t know how am i going to be a part of such a thing. I would rather sit and let everyone scream. But I know that’s not going to get the attention of the interviewers, seems pretty difficult.

Lets see what happens.

Ps.

I know not many people read this blog, but those who do, pray for me.

Random thoughts

Here's something i read lately:

"An estimated one in two men and one in three women are diagnosed with cancer at some point".

And another fact is that almost half the patients diagnosed with cancer die, due to it or related complications.

So i thought it is important for us to know and have some basic knowledge about cancer prevalence and home detections. So looked up for similar information and here it is:

Roughly, cancer symptoms can be divided into three groups:

Local symptoms: unusual lumps or swelling (tumor), hemorrhage (bleeding), pain and/or ulceration. Compression of surrounding tissues may cause symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing the eyes and skin).

Symptoms of metastasis (spreading): enlarged lymph nodes, cough and hemoptysis, hepatomegaly (enlarged liver), bone pain, fracture of affected bones and neurological symptoms. Although advanced cancer may cause pain, it is often not the first symptom.

Systemic symptoms: weight loss, poor appetite, fatigue and cachexia (wasting), excessive sweating (night sweats), anemia and specific paraneoplastic phenomena, i.e. specific conditions that are due to an active cancer, such as thrombosis or hormonal changes.

Every symptom in the above list can be caused by a variety of conditions (a list of which is referred to as the differential diagnosis). Cancer may be a common or uncommon cause of each item.

Often knowledge saves lives, in ways more than one.

Issued in public interest..:)

New Research

I recently came across this article and wanted to share it with you guys. Its about cancer treatment and the research going on. Sounds pretty convincing, i think i should look in a little more detail, as it sounds quite simple. If it were so simple people would not have spent so much time on research, someone must have thought about this earlier. Anyways, here's the article:

Researchers have identified a chemical chain of events that leads cancer cells to age, and thus stop reproducing. By exploiting this process, they propose, scientists might be able to develop new cancer therapies.

The molecular sequence of events, called a signaling path way, is described in the March 18 issue of the research journal Nature by investigators Paolo Pandolfi of the Harvard Medical School and colleagues.

Cancer cells are normally able to reproduce themselves indefinitely with out ageing; this indeed is a core aspect of the problem confronting cancer victims. The out-of-control cell division leads to the creation of an ever-growing load of tumors.

The newfound pathway drives cell ageing, or “senescence,” only in cancerous conditions, according to Pan dolfi’s group. A key component of the pathway is a gene called Skp2, the scientists reported. By suppressing this gene, they found that they could profoundly restrict tumor formation in mice by causing cancer cells to age. The process curbed cell division.

The researchers also found that a Skp2-blocking drug induced ageing in a laboratory culture of human prostate cancer cells.

Because the new found ageing pathway seems to operate only in cancer, it raises hopes that it could prove a useful target for anti-cancer treatments, which might avoid harming healthy cells, the researchers argued. Such a treatment might also have the advantage of operating in a wide array of different cancer types.

“The challenge ahead is to test whether these pre-clinical studies in mice can be translated into more effective cancer therapies,” wrote Manuel Serrano is of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre in Madrid, in a commentary accompanying the study in Nature.

Hope you found it interesting and informative.

random thoughts

was just sittin lookin up at the ceiling and a thought came to my mind. something which i had thought about quite some years back. so thought of sharing it with you. and also had not updated my blog in quite a while.;)

when we were kids, we used to look up at the teenagers and think, wish i was a little older, would have had much more freedom. when mom used to make us wear extra warm clothes even when we were already hot in winters, but she wouldnt listen saying that she knows better. and we could'nt argue and had to wear 'em, sweating inside. frustration used make my blood boil. thinking that i know how hot i already am. i used to pray, oh lord, when will i be a little older that mom will trust me when i say im not cold.

as a teenager, i used to look up to adults and think, boy must they be happy, they can drive cars without the risk f being caught as underage drivers. they can hang out with friends till late without being thrown a huge questionnaire when you get home. i mean adults are really respected in the society, as if they know what they are doing and are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. when you're seventeen, people still take you as kids, but as soon as you turn eighteen, you're entirely a different person and people look at you in an entirely new way. Even the Indian government acknowledges you as a person. you get your driver's license, your voter card, your PAN card and what not. till seventeen you were no one and now they entrust you with even choosing the government. sheesh... how'd they decide that eighteen was the right age... i wonder...

when adults see people in their thirties, they think they are at the peak of their lives. do whatever you wanna do. no one to question at all. the cycle goes on.

but the sad part is, with more freedom, comes more responsibility. when we were kids, we just had to wonder about our homework. as teenagers, we had homework plus peers. as adults we had college work, jobs, peers, partners and so on.

and the worst part is, human nature, when we were kids, we so wanted to become adults and when we became adults, we wish we were kids, life was so easy then... never be happy or satisfied with what you have.

sad. sad. sad.

The third movie I saw this week was ' Stepfather' or was it ' The Stepfather'? I don't even remember.

Wouldn't have much to say bout this movie, it was'nt that good. it was an OK type movie. An adult movie. The beginning was OK. The script was flat and predictable. The cast wasn't impressive either. The camera work was good, it did provide a few chills here and there. The end was HORRIBLE...FUCKED UP...TOTALLY CRAP

So it killed the impression of the whole movie, making it a stupid junk movie!!!

Avoid it if you can!!
The second movie i saw was the well publicized and long awaited 'AVATAR':

At the onset, I have to say, they have totally kept up its hype and reputation. The movie as publicized, was totally worth the 1400 crores they pumped into it. The story line was not that impressive. The special effects and animation, on the other hand was something else, totally out of this world.

The movie demands 3D viewing. Anybody who has not had the opportunity to watch it in 3D should definitely watch it again and in 3D for a totally different and awesome experience.

This actually made me wonder, how do they manage to make that 3D effect in movies so pronounced and realistic. The glasses which we were made to wear for the 3D effect, as I thought, were basically polaroids, so i believe that they make the movie in some way which is polarised to different angles. When these rays are passed through polaroids, they different angles come differently, thus creating the required 3D effect.

If you are not aware, 3D viewing or recording requires at least two cameras so as to capture the angular dimensions of the object being viewed. It is for the same reason that we have two eyes, else we would see the whole world in 2D..imagine....

It is for this same reason that a person who has lost one of his eyes, has no sense of depth, as his brain's 3D comprehension is affected, thus resulting in a loss of his 3D viewing ability.

Will research deeper in this topic and post it soon:)

As of now, coming back to the original topic, an awesome movie, a must watch. In 3D that is...

Random Things

This week i saw three movies, so plan to write some junk 'bout 'em.

First was "3 Idiots":
The movie is cool. It depicts the life of three Engineering students. All the fun they have, all the problems they face and how they deal with 'em. It however, as all Indian movies do, does not stop there, and goes a little further to put in some romance and songs and dances. It does provide a very nice assortment of emotions. The change or rather flipping of emotions is something which actually appealed to me. One moment everyone's happy, and the very next moment in a very striking fashion, someone dies, or something terrible happens. Thus creating a plethora of emotions, in a good way though.

The movie has something for everyone, emotions and romance for girls..;) science for geeks, a lesson for elders and comedy for everyone. It has also brought into light the most important topic of 'Importance of gaining knowledge rather than just marks'. Has tried to highlight the scientific and analytical mind we students should have, rather than just the getting good marks idea.

Overall i'd say, they movie is a must watch. Hated Kareena Kapoor though. she's just too ugly.

Anyone who has read the book 'Five Point Someone' by 'Chetan Bhagat' would immediately realize that most of the movie's script was taken from it. And at the end of a successful run, no credit is given to the writer and he very politely, in such a sophisticated manner, which is rather unbelievable, appeals to the director, that he should be acknowledged. I mean, What the FUCK??? how is it possible that a music director had to pay 2 crores to a guy who claimed that he picked two lines from his song and this director who almost lifted the entire movie's script from Chetan Bhagat's novel does not even acknowledge him, forget about payin' money!!

I would clearly say, publicity stunt!!
